Introduction to Homeschooling
Hi, welcome to my 3rd blog. Based on the total vote i put in instagram, homeschooling topic is higher than baby's health topic. But i will write about baby's health later too.❤
In my opinion, (not based on the Wikipedia of homeschooling), Homeschooling is a mother/ father or caregiver, who gives education to the children, whenever they have time together and wherever they go together.
Life is a One Time offer, Use it Well. Use it well my dear beloved friends. Use it well for your children. Education is the greatest opportunity you can give to shape the future generation. The foundation of love and humanity in the core heart of one child begins from the parents and whoever that educates them. Give your time, give your love to your child. Time is running out...
Core Foundation of Homeschooling is not just about ABC and 123. Not just about writing and reading. It's about exploring the world in correct ways, with full of knowledge, fun and interactive ways.
There are some principles that i followed, to guide me homeschooling my son. Some advices are from Child Psychiatrist in Gleneagles Penang, Dr Sherine, BSc.Psyc.(Leefs,UK), MSc.Devl.Psyc.(Herts, UK).
1. Love Nature
Make your child fall in love with the nature. Bring them to safe gardens or parks, let them see the trees, touch the leaves and feel the grass. Bring them to the beach, let them play with the sand, witness the sunset, feel the cool air breeze and listen to the waves.
Make your child fall in love with the animals. Teach them to be kind with animals. Let them understand, animals are precious living things so as human. Bring them to the zoo because that's the only closer way for them to see the wild animals. We have tons of beautiful animal parks in Malaysia. My favorite is always Wildlife Park and Underwater World in Langkawi. I don't mind bringing my baby there for multiple times.
2. Daily Conversation
When talking to your child, bend your knees, set your eye levels straight with your child's eyes. Then they will feel that they are matters to you. Avoid screaming and scolding them. If they do anything wrong, explain to them why is it wrong. Don't just simply say 'No'.
Make daily conversation to be more educational. For example, when your child eat strawberry.
You can say like, "Strawberry is Yummy~. Strawberry is Red. Arik likes to eat Strawberry". and etc.
Or maybe when you're in the car, you can say like, "Look at the Trees. Look at the Clouds". "Big Truck. They carry heavy things." Or you can ask your child like, "How many motor? How many car? What color is the car?"
The noneducational talk is like, "Eat. Just Eat It" or "Eat, Mummy is Busy".
Or in the car situation, your child played alone while you scrolling the phone.👎
Back to my first point. Time. Make time to have more educational conversation with your child.
3. Language
Choose one language for beginners. If you want to speak in English, don't mix it with Malay. If you want to go with Malay, don't mix it with English.
For example, the mixing language is, "Please duduk sayang. It's not good untuk diri atas meja". Instead, you should say like this, "Jom duduk sayang. Tak elok diri atas meja". Or "Let's seat dear. It's not good to stand on the table".
I'm not expert about this but i've read some tips from a few parents that they don't mix languages with their children. It will cause confusion and children couldn't master the language properly.
My plan is to speak fully English with my son until he's 4 or 5 years old. Then will talk fully in Malay until he's 6 years old. Because generally, Malay language is very easy to master. Afterwards, will continue with English and Mandarin (class hopefully).
I'm not good in English. I didn't score in English 😂. I know my grammar is bad. But my husband started using English even in our first date. At that time, i feel a bit awkward because he's so good in it haha. Slowly, until now, English becoming our daily conversation. Hopefully this will benefit our son.
4. Words
If your child having difficulties in speech, try simplify the sentences (when you talk to them).
For example, "Look, that's a very big elephant". Instead, just say, "Big Elephant".
5. Educational Toys vs Superheroes Toys
Expose your child with educational toys or Montessori materials. Something like Mega Blocks/ Lego, Shape Sorting, Animals, Vehicles, Counting Toys and etc. With these educational toys, we can increase their vocab.
Avoid exposing your child with fantasy toys or superheroes. Because at this time, they doesn't know how to differentiate between the reality and fantasy. Avoid all these Monster toys, Avengers, Upin Ipin and etc. Come on guys, I love Avengers too! But I never let my son know their existence yet 😂
He can watch it later in life when he's old enough.
But hey. We did let him have this one particular type of superheroes. Super Wings. First because my son loves airplane so much. Second, there are no fighting in any scene. Super Wings are about problem solving. The good thing is he's not obsess with it.
6. No Gadget
I will share another post on how i manage to keep my son from Tv and Gadgets in 2 months now. Yes, 2 months now and counting insyaAllah. So i will not elaborate much about this here because there are too much for me to say about it.
Avoid Gadgets. Avoid Screen.
I made my husband promised to never buy any screen tab/ phone for my son until he finishes his high school. Maybe old phone like Nokia will be okay just for emergency contacts.
Hate. I have the 'Hate" feeling just by looking at the situations like images below.
And I definitely never let my son hold handphone by his own two hands.
How to Start Homeschooling?
There are no proper beginning for Homeschooling. You just do it with your child in daily life. Just go with it. Find some inspiring activities from Homeschooler Moms out there. Remember, spend more time with little ones. Tell them you love them everyday ❤
